Cannabis Product Types Explained

What every product is, how it works, and who it's best for

🌿 Flower

The cannabis plant's dried and cured buds — the most traditional form of consumption. Flower is smoked in a pipe, bong, or rolled into a joint.

  • Onset: 2–10 minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours
  • MN purchase limit: 2 oz per transaction
  • Sold by: Gram, eighth (3.5g), quarter (7g), half-ounce (14g), ounce (28g)

Best for: Consumers who want the full terpene/cannabinoid experience of the plant, prefer fast onset and shorter duration, and are comfortable with smoking.

What to look at: THC %, CBD %, and terpene profile. Ask for a "terpene-forward" recommendation if you want more nuance than THC % alone.

🚬 Pre-Rolls

Pre-ground flower rolled into a paper and ready to smoke. Comes as singles or in multi-packs. Infused pre-rolls (dipped in concentrate or coated with kief) offer higher potency.

  • Onset: 2–10 minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours

Best for: Consumers who want the convenience of a pre-rolled joint without the skill of rolling. Good for sharing.

🍬 Edibles

Cannabis-infused food and drink products — gummies, chocolates, beverages, mints, and more. THC is absorbed through the digestive system and metabolized by the liver into a more potent compound (11-hydroxy-THC), which is why edibles feel different and stronger than inhalation at equivalent doses.

  • Onset: 30 minutes – 2 hours (highly variable)
  • Duration: 4–8 hours (sometimes longer)
  • MN purchase limit: 800 mg THC per transaction
  • Dose: Measured in milligrams (mg) of THC

Best for: Consumers who prefer not to inhale; those wanting longer-lasting effects; people who want more precise dosing via mg.

Important: Start with 2.5–5 mg if you're new. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. See our Dosing Guide for full guidance.

💨 Vapes

Cannabis oil or distillate heated and inhaled as vapor — not smoke. Available as cartridges (attached to a battery pen), disposable all-in-one devices, and pods.

  • Onset: 2–10 minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours

Best for: Consumers who want discretion (less odor than flower), portability, and faster onset than edibles.

What to look for: Live resin and full-spectrum cartridges preserve more of the plant's original terpene profile than distillate-based carts, resulting in a more nuanced experience.

🧪 Concentrates

Highly concentrated cannabis extracts — wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, badder, crumble, and more. THC content typically ranges from 60–90%. Consumed via dabbing (a specialized process using a dab rig and torch) or in some cases added to flower.

  • Onset: Near-immediate
  • Duration: 1–3 hours
  • MN purchase limit: 8 g per transaction

Best for: Experienced consumers with established tolerance. Not recommended for new cannabis consumers.

Solvent-free options: Live rosin and ice water hash (bubble hash) are extracted without solvents — a distinction some consumers prefer.

💧 Tinctures

Liquid cannabis extracts administered sublingually (under the tongue) via a dropper. When absorbed under the tongue, onset is faster than edibles (15–45 minutes); when swallowed, it's similar to edibles.

  • Onset (sublingual): 15–45 minutes
  • Duration: 2–4 hours (sublingual), 4–8 hours (swallowed)

Best for: Consumers who want precise dosing without inhalation, or who want faster onset than standard edibles. Popular among medical consumers.

🧴 Topicals

Cannabis-infused lotions, balms, salves, and patches applied directly to the skin. Most topicals do not produce psychoactive effects because THC doesn't penetrate the bloodstream through the skin barrier — they act locally at the site of application. Transdermal patches are an exception and can produce systemic effects.

  • Best for: Consumers seeking localized relief without intoxication; those wanting to avoid inhalation or ingestion entirely.
